Directorate of the General Studies Programme

The Directorate of the General Studies Programme is a vital academic arm of Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, responsible for delivering cross-disciplinary courses that enrich students' intellectual and moral development. The Programme offers foundational courses in areas such as communication skills, philosophy, logic, peace studies, ICT, and Nigerian culture ensuring all students acquire a well-rounded education.

The current and Pioneer of this directorate is Dr. Grace Oluremilekun Akanbi a distinguished Nigerian academic specializing in gender education, educational policy, and the history of education.

The Directorate of the General Studies Programme (DGSP) at Emmanuel Alayande University of Education (EAUED), Oyo, is an essential academic unit that provides cross-disciplinary education to all students, regardless of their major.

Since the institution's transition to a university, the Directorate has been restructured to offer the General Studies (GST) courses required by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for all degree-seeking students.

1. Leadership

The current and pioneer Director of the Directorate is Dr. Grace Oluremilekun Akanbi. She is a distinguished academic specializing in gender education, educational policy, and the history of education. Her leadership focuses on ensuring that students graduate with a well-rounded intellectual and moral foundation.

2. Core Purpose and Mission

The General Studies Programme is designed to bridge the gap between specialized academic fields and broader life skills. Its goals include:

  • Intellectual Development: Broadening students' knowledge beyond their specific departments (e.g., teaching a Science student about Nigerian Culture).

  • Communication Proficiency: Improving literacy, writing, and speaking skills through Use of English courses.

  • Civic Responsibility: Educating students on peace studies, conflict resolution, and the history of Nigerian society.

  • Digital Literacy: Equipping every student with basic ICT skills necessary for modern education and the global workforce.

3. Key Course Areas (GST Courses)

All EAUED students must register for and pass these courses to be eligible for graduation. The curriculum typically covers:

  • Communication in English: Focuses on academic writing, reading strategies, and oral communication.

  • Nigerian Peoples and Culture: Explores the diverse history, social norms, and cultural evolution of Nigeria.

  • Philosophy, Logic, and Human Existence: Develops critical thinking and reasoning skills.

  • Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution: Teaches the mechanics of social harmony and peaceful co-existence.

  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT): Practical and theoretical basics of computing and digital tools.

4. Strategic Importance for Students

  • Mandatory Registration: At EAUED, students are often required to register for their GST courses first before proceeding to departmental or faculty-specific courses on the student portal.

  • CGPA Impact: Every course under the Directorate is credit-bearing. This means that a student’s performance in General Studies directly affects their final degree classification.

  • Universal Applicability: The skills learned here (like logic and communication) are what make EAUED graduates competitive in interviews and professional environments outside of teaching.
